Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao 2 Betting Odds

It was an indication of the world we live in today, that the initial announcement of a follow-up fight between Floyd Mayweather Jnr. and Manny Pacquiao came not via a conventional media announcement, but with both boxers posting videos on Instagram on 15th September 2018 indicating that a rematch was on the cards following on from their first fight in Las Vegas in May 2015.

I’m coming back to fight Manny Pacquiao this year. Another 9 figure pay day on the way @mayweatherpromotions

A post shared by Floyd Mayweather (@floydmayweather) on

Mayweather stated in his post that the fight would happen “this year” and that “another 9 figure payday on the way”.  He was also heard remarking to Pacquiao that he was going to, “take [the belt] from you as I did before”.

In Pacquiao’s video (posted with the comment “50-1 #NoExcuses” – a reference to Mayweather’s unbeaten run of 50 fights), Mayweather was heard to mention “2nd of December”.  It’s as yet unknown if any formal negotiations as to date and venue have actually taken place, but according to a number of sources, the fight will probably be held in Las Vegas, with the two target dates thought to be 1st December and 8th December.

There have been a number of suggested locations mentioned for the rematch, including the MGM Grand (Las Vegas), T-Mobile Arena (Las Vegas), AT&T Stadium (Dallas) and Barclays Center (New York).  Outside of the USA, suggestions have included Tokyo, Macau and Dubai.  The appeal of fighting outside the USA is for Pacquiao, who reportedly has debts with the IRS that could prevent him from fighting in the United States.  The fact that Mayweather is American is of little consequence, as the majority of those attending the first fight were backing the Filipino.

Mayweather vs Pacquiao 2 Betting Tips & Odds

There are a number of factors to take into consideration when contemplating Mayweather vs Pacquiao betting tips.  Mayweather was a clear winner when the pair met over three years ago and he goes into the fight boasting an unblemished record.  That’s enough to make him the firm favourite to beat Pacquiao again.

If looking for reasons to doubt the undefeated five-division world champion, the main one would be that the 41-year-old has not fought since his bout with MMA star Conor McGregor in August 2017 and he announced his retirement after the 10th round KO win over the Irish cage fighter.

An ageing boxer who is coming out of retirement and hasn’t fought for well over a year might not be 100% focused on the job in hand and could perhaps fail or being unable to prepare properly for the fight.

At present, you can bet on Floyd Mayweather at -225 with Betway Sports, while Pacquiao is +210 with the same bookmaker.  The draw, which would surely all but guarantees a third lucrative contest for the fighters, can be backed at +2000 with William Hill.

Of course, Pacquiao is the only eight-division world champion in the history of boxing, as well as being the very first boxer to win the lineal championship in 5 different weight divisions.  His professional record over 69 fights is 60-2-7, but four of those seven losses have come in his last 10 fights.

Pacquiao scored his first knockout in nine years by stopping Argentina’s Lucas Matthysse in round 7 to win the WBA (Regular) welterweight title in his last fight and actually dropped Matthysse three times before the fight was stopped in round seven.  Even so, one knockout in nine years isn’t a statistic that will cause Mayweather any sleepless nights.

That certainly needs bearing in mind for any Mayweather vs. Pacquiao betting tips, as Pacquiao’s main hope of victory will come in winning the fight early on, as it’s difficult to see the Filipino being able to match Mayweather physically should the fight go the distance again.

Mayweather to win by Decision or Technical Decision is available at -125 at Betway and, as happened in the first fight, that looks a strong possibility.

Recap: Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao 1

The first meeting between Mayweather and Pacquiao took place in May 2015 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, in what was billed as, “The Fight of the Century”.

It was certainly the most lucrative fight in history, with it being estimated to have generated US$400m in total, with the fighters splitting about US$230m between them.

Mayweather won an intriguing, rather than spectacular fight, by a unanimous decision, with the three judges scoring the fight, 118–110; 116–112; 116–112.  Pacquiao later blamed his loss on a shoulder injury.

The fight was extremely cagey, to begin with, although Mayweather did land a couple of right hands on the counter.

Pacquiao’s left hand was seen by many as his main hope of victory but, although he did rock Mayweather in the 4th round and gave him a few other uncomfortable moments, Mayweather’s greater height and size increasingly told as the fight reached the mid-point of its scheduled 12 rounds.  It was evident by that stage that Pacquiao lacked the necessary power to deliver a knockout blow against such a strong defensive boxer.

In the end, Mayweather produced another defensive masterclass, whilst inflicting damaging blows to his opponent when necessary.  The statistics for punches thrown told the story, with Mayweather throwing 435, of which 148 landed.  By comparison, Pacquiao threw 429 punches, of which only 81 found their target.
