BC Lions vs Montreal Alouettes (BC -3 points)
Week three kicks off in Montreal as the Als play host to the BC Lions on Thursday night. The 1-1 Alouettes will be looking to make it two straight home victories when BC rolls into town as they will also be looking to stretch their road record to a perfect 2-0. Lions QB Jonathan Jennings has been solid in his two starts so far this year although the offense would be much more prolific with him having a better showing in the passing game. Jennings has just one touchdown this year and will now be facing a Montreal defense that has only surrendered a league best 39 points through two weeks.
Darian Durant of Montreal hasn’t faired too much better than his counterpart as the veteran is only averaging 199 yards per game through the air, although he does have three majors. The team is showing early signs of really missing departed wideout Duron Carter who left in the offseason.
Calgary Stampeders vs Winnipeg Blue Bombers (Calgary -3.5 points)
Friday night football features a Western clash between the undefeated Stamps (1-0-1) take on the Blue Bombers in Winnipeg. The Bombers had an early bye week so they have only played one game, which they’ve won. The quarterback play in this game will likely be the deciding factor in the outcome as two of the best go head to head. Matt Nichols was lights out in the lone game for Winnipeg tossing 331 yards and four touchdowns against the Saskatchewan Roughriders last week. Calgary’s Bo Levi Mitchell is arguably the best quarterback in the CFL and has been killing it so far this year. In two games so far this season Mitchell has passed for 671 yards and 5 touchdowns and no interceptions.
The Stampeders defense has been leaking this young season as they’ve conceded 70 points so far through two games meaning it may not be a bad idea to go over the number of 59.0 points.
Toronto Argonauts vs Ottawa Redblacks (Ottawa -4.0 points)
The battle of Ontario highlights the first of the weekend games this week when the 1-1 Argos travel to the Nation’s capital to take on Ottawa 0-1-1 who will be looking to win their first game.
Ottawa quarterback and former Argo Trevor Harris has been absolutely assaulting opposing defenses so far through two games and will look to continue that trend against his old team. Harris has looked brilliant in the early stages of his starting role filling in for the departed Henry Burris. Through two games Harris has thrown for 725 passing yards and 5 touchdowns to just one interception.
The Argos defense has been porous on critical passing downs so far and after a strong showing week 1 against Hamilton, surrendered a lot of key first downs against BC last week. Toronto are led by future hall of famer Ricky Ray who even at the advanced age of 37 has shown he’s still got it. Ray has a league best 833 yards passing through two games with 2 touchdowns and one interception. The Argos have shown an ability to move the ball downfield with ease thanks in large part to the brilliant offensive mind of Marc Trestman. Unfortunately all that yardage hasn’t equated into majors as the Argos have mustered up just 47 points this year, while conceding 43.
Hamilton Tiger-Cats vs Saskatchewan Roughriders (Saskatchewan -1.5 points)
Week three wraps up in Saskatchewan when they play host to Hamilton as both teams are looking for their first win of the year.
The Roughriders are 0-2 although haven’t played poorly as they’ve been on the short end of the stick for two straight games. The Tiger-Cats are 0-1 this year but have struggled to score points as they’ve compiled just 15 points. Zach Collaros clearly has to play better, and by all accounts will finish this season among the top of most offensive categories for passers. Although the former MOP candidate struggled in his lone outing this year against Toronto as he finished with 242 yards and one interception.
Riders QB Kevin Glenn has done a good job moving the ball this year as his 675 yards and five touchdowns are good, although the three picks through two games has shown a lack of ball protection in a league where turnovers are critical.
Something has to give this week for one of these teams however the Riders can’t afford to drop a third straight game to start the season after last year’s debacle.
