The title fight on the main card is always the most anticipated of the matches however this one is extra special as it marks a rematch nearly two years later between the combatants. This fight was originally supposed to happen at UFC 206 however an unfortunate groin injury to Cormier forced the fight to be postponed from last Christmas.
Daniel “DC” Cormier is an impressive 18-1-0 in his MMA career and is would love nothing more to make it two-for-two against Johnson. The lone loss for the 38-year old came against Jon Jones back at UFC 182. That date is important because his very next fight after the unanimous decision loss to Jones marked his original fight against Anthony Johnson. A fight in which he would win by submission at 2:39 of the third round.
Johnson 22-5-0 has been a man on a mission since his last meeting with Cormier. In the three fights after the loss, Johnson has won all three by KO and more importantly has been disposing of the competition in quick fashion. His longest fight over that stretch lasted only 0:28 seconds into the second round against Jimi Manuwa.
It will be interesting to see if whether or not Johnson will change his approach on Saturday night as he may look to prolong the fight a little longer. Johnson is 5 years younger, 3” taller, and has a remarkable 6” reach advantage over the more compact Daniel Cormier. Johnson loves to use his orthodox upright boxing approach while Cormier would prefer to win by submission.
The oddsmakers are predicting a close match on Saturday as William Hill have Johnson at 1.80 and Cormier at 2.00 odds on the moneyline to win the match.
There are two other key events on the main card that both warrant some attention. The Chris Weidman vs Gegard Mousasi fight features the #4 and #5 ranked contestants in the Middleweight division. Mousasi comes in with the slight betting advantage paying 1.73 on the moneyline while Weidman is a slight underdog at 2.00 odds.
The lone woman’s fight on the main card will see a couple of newcomers as Cynthia Calvillo (4-0-0) will square off against Pearl Gonzalez who will be making her UFC debut. Will Hill predicting a much more one-sided affair as Calvillo is paying 1.40 straight up compared to the cool 3.00 odds on Gonzalez.
